What are DUI Enforcement Zones?

Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring & Wheaton, Maryland

According to the Maryland State Police, DUI Enforcement Zones are intended to, “Remind motorists [state police] are serious about drunk driving enforcement and as part of an ongoing statewide campaign called ‘Checkpoint Strikeforce,’ police departments across Maryland will begin placing ‘Drunk Driving Enforcement Zone’ banners on roadsides where sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols occur.”

Of course, signs stating “DUI Enforcement Zone” do not make all other areas “non-enforcement” zones, nor do they complicate DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols outside of designated areas. They do, however, give drivers some idea of where checkpoints may occur on a more regular basis.

On Friday, April 8th, there was a DUI checkpoint in Gaithersburg outside of an enforcement zone. This is now a monthly occurrence in Montgomery County due to the “success” these checkpoints have had for state and local law enforcement. If you have been stopped at a checkpoint and charged with DUI or DWI in Montgomery County, Rockville defense attorney Leon Geller can help.
